Keenan was inspired by Bill Murray’s performance in the 1981 comedy film Stripes to join the United States Army, with the intention of having the G.I. Bill fund his dream of attending art school.

Keenan has a son named Devo, who has contributed to his father’s music. Devo sang backing vocals on A Perfect Circle’s Thirteenth Step and was credited as the cellist on Ashes Divide’s Keep Telling Myself It’s Alright.
